Welcome

Hi! my name is Trent Rolf and I am a Computer Engineer in Salt Lake City, Utah. I created this website for a permanent home for all my projects that are a little too nerdy for the family blog.

My main interests are low-level and embedded software development, especially digital signal processing. I like learning about scheduling, multi-threading, and embedded operating systems. I have written software to run on some commercial operating systems like QNX and VxWorks, and have implemented a basic RTOS myself in school.

My favorite application is developing audio signal processing software, and I am lucky enough to be working on professional audio products at my current job at Harman Signal Processing in Sandy, UT.

A cool site to submit GPS data and pictures for trails that you have hiked, biked, etc. It gives me an excuse to use all the cool Android GPS apps on my phone.

PROJECTS

Guitar Effects

In an attempt to make myself cooler, I wrote software for a TI DSP to create some electric guitar effects. I did it for my final project for one of my DSP classes at the University of Utah.

dbx SC Digital Matrix Processors

This is the first product I worked on at Harman. I wrote HDL for several programmable logic devices, low-level C software for the UI (blinky lights!), some DSP software, and some self-test software. I also developed an automated daily build.

Morse Code Audio Decoder

Although it doesn't really have a useful application these days, the decoder was a blast to put together.

Nehalem Cache & Memory Analysis

This paper takes a look at the improvements to the memory organization in Intel's Nehalem architecture beind the new Core i7 processors.

Multichannel Audio Decoder

This was my senior project at Brigham Young University. We created a device that would input a digital audio signal carrying "surround sound" data and decoded it for use with professional audio gear.

FFT IC Project

This was my final project in a VLSI class at the University of Utah. We developed a chip (never got a chance to fab) that would perform Fast-Fourier Transforms in a power-efficient manner.
